How Can the Church Survive Without Tithing?

non tithing churches

The church can survive without tithes because people can give money in other ways, such as through donations or volunteering their time. Additionally, the church can allocate its resources in other ways to maintain its functions.

Many tithe advocates claim the church needs tithes to survive. It needs churchgoers to contribute 10% of their income regularly. Without a mandatory tithe, it is difficult to maintain a ministry. While it’s true ministries do need donations to function, it’s not true that church doors will close if believers don’t tithe.

Non-Tithing Churches in the Bible

The early church existed for nearly 800 years before establishing a tithing system. Of course, the circumstances were different back then. There were no mega-church buildings to maintain. Believers gathered at each other’s homes.

There wasn’t a staff of religious leaders and administrators who required salaries. Some apostles, such as Paul, had occupations while spreading the Gospel (Acts 18:3, 2 Thessalonians 3:8). There was no full-time ministry as we know it today.

Nevertheless, money was collected. These funds were often used to aid the saints who were in need. Even Jesus’ ministry required money. He had several wealthy donors who supported his work). However, Jesus Christ and the apostles didn’t collect tithes; their ministries were effective and impactful and changed the world.

The Real Tithing Statistics

How does a church make money? The facts tell us the modern church is surviving without tithes, for the most part. According to Nonprofits Source, only five percent of Christians in the United States pay so-called tithes. This means the rest of the financial support comes from offerings. It’s the givers, not the tithers, who keep ministries afloat.

New Testament Grace Giving

Pastors should shift their focus from tithing to giving. Why? Because giving is the New Testament model for the Church. The principle of giving is also the principle of receiving. When believers give, by Divine law, God must give back to them. Additionally, giving is a matter of the heart. When taught properly, believers will learn how giving strengthens their relationship with God.

When churchgoers understand the benefits of giving under grace, the monetary contributions will increase. So, it makes more sense to optimize the power of Grace giving instead of pressuring congregations to tithe.

What will happen if pastors tell the truth about tithes? How will churchgoers respond when they learn the modern-day tithe isn’t biblical and they don’t have to pay tithes?

The natural reaction is many of them will stop tithing. This lets you know they paid tithes out of compulsion, not out of a spirit of generosity. Scripture says God wants cheerful givers (2 Corinthians 9:7). He doesn’t want reluctant tithers.
