Will I Go to Hell If I Don’t Pay Tithes?

disappointed black woman crying and touching head

Christians will not go to hell if they don’t tithe. There’s no evidence in the Bible suggesting tithes have any bearing on whether one goes to hell. Entry into heaven is based on faith, accepting Jesus as the savior, and living by God’s word. Even those who don’t give 10% of their income can find forgiveness for their sins and still obtain everlasting life with God. Abiding by the standard of tithing won’t determine your future – trusting in Jesus’ will!

This podcast will explore the Bible’s teachings about tithing and provide biblical proof that Christians will not go to hell if they don’t tithe.

If you’re wondering, “How to not go to hell?” some preachers will tell you to tithe. In other words, they link paying tithes in church to eternal life. Don’t fret. Why? Because there are several reasons why you won’t go to hell if you don’t pay tithes.

Wait for a second. If you have fears about what will happen if you don’t tithe, check out an article I wrote on the topic. What you discover may shock you.

New Testament Tithing: Got Questions?

The Bible doesn’t say anything about tithes being a requirement for salvation. Christians are saved by grace through faith in Jesus Christ and nothing else. When you receive Jesus Christ as your personal savior, that’s the foundation of your salvation.

But if you can’t afford to tithe, or if you don’t have enough money to tithe, you shouldn’t worry. God is more concerned with your heart than He is with your money.

And if you have concerns about your salvation, hold up for a minute. I wrote an article about the connection between tithes and salvation that I encourage you to read.

Tithing Was for Ancient Israel

The New Testament teaches that we are saved by grace through faith, not by works.

This means we don’t have to do anything to earn our salvation- it’s a gift from God. And since we’re saved by grace, we don’t have to do anything to keep our salvation, including tithing. Tithing is an Old Testament law specifically for the Israelites and doesn’t apply to Christians.

So don’t worry if you’re not tithing- you’re not going to hell because of it. The only thing that can separate us from God is our sin, and even that can’t keep us out of heaven if we repent and ask for forgiveness. So rest assured, dear Christian, you are safe in God’s grace.

Tithe if you want to, but don’t do it because you’re trying to avoid eternal hell.

And if you have questions about tithes in the Old Testament, hold up for just a bit. I wrote an article about how and why the tithe became a law.

Saved Through Faith

When you attend church, you should receive the truth of God’s word.

Even if tithing were required for salvation, you need to be saved before paying tithes. This is because God generously provides everything we need for salvation through faith in Jesus Christ. We are not saved by our good works but by His grace alone.

The Bible says, “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith–and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God– not by works, so that no one can boast” (Ephesians 2:8-9).

Excuse me! In this informative post I wrote, discover more about how Jesus supported his ministry without relying on tithing.

Christians Aren’t Obligated to Tithe

Jesus didn’t mention hell when he spoke about tithing. Jesus himself mentioned the tithe as a rebuke to the Pharisees.

In Matthew 23: 23, Jesus says, “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You give a tenth of your spices—mint, dill and cummin. But you have neglected the more important matters of the law—justice, mercy and faithfulness. You should have practiced the latter, without neglecting the former.”

Here, Jesus explicitly states that justice, mercy, and faithfulness are more important than tithing spices. Therefore, Christians can rest assured that they will not be condemned to eternal fire for not tithing, as it is not as important as other aspects of the faith.

While some Christians may feel obligated to tithe, the Bible does not state that it is required to avoid damnation. Jesus said mercy and faithfulness are more important than giving a tithe.

Even though hell exists, don’t accept the lie that you’re going to hell if you don’t tithe. The Bible doesn’t support that claim. Give cheerfully and generously, but don’t give out of fear or obligation. Give because you want to, not because you have to. God will bless you for it.

And if you still have questions about whether Christians should tithe, hold up for a second. I wrote an article exposing the myth of the “Christian Tithe” that I encourage you to read.

Give Out of Love

One reason for attending church is to learn how to give in the age of Grace.

In the New Testament, Christians are never told to tithe. Instead, believers are told to give out of their love for God. The Bible has much to say about generosity and giving, but nowhere does it say that you’ll go to hell if you don’t tithe. The Bible says the opposite:

One of the most famous verses about giving is from 2 Corinthians 9: 7-8.

“Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work.”

This verse shows that it is not the amount we give but the attitude behind our giving that matters to God. He is more concerned with our hearts than He is with our wallets.

So don’t worry if you’re not able to tithe. God is still pleased with your giving as long as it is done out of love and not out of obligation.

A Final Word

It’s sad when your church attendance is marred by preachers who threaten you with hell to coerce you into paying tithes. Many believers have concerns about “How to go to hell.” Let’s say there are many ways to get there, but not tithing isn’t one.

So, to sum up, Christians will not go to hell if they don’t tithe. The Bible does not support this claim. The Bible says God is more concerned with our hearts than our wallets. We should give generously and cheerfully out of love for Him, not out of fear or obligation. And when we do, He will bless us abundantly.
