Listen to the Podcast
I share my perspective on why celebrity preachers are brought to your church and how the power of celebrity influences people’s behavior – and their pocketbooks.
Money Cometh to You
A well-known Prosperity Gospel/Word of Faith preacher visited Kim’s church for his Money Come to Me Conference. During the conference, he told the church members to sow seeds (i.e., give money) to their pastor.
Since then, Kim writes “Some of the congregation started going up to the Pastor before he started to minister the word to give him money.”
False Doctrine Territory
No commandment is given to Christians that says you must sow seeds (or give money) to the pastor. There is nothing inherently wrong with giving money to your pastor.
However, if someone tells you you must “sow seeds” (give money) to the pastor, especially as a way of receiving blessings from God, you’re being led into false doctrine territory.
According to the New Testament, the Apostle Paul encourages voluntary giving and free-will offerings.
The Apostle offers these guidelines for giving:
- Give cheerfully
- Give voluntarily
- Give what you can afford
- Give from your abundance
In my teaching, I expound on these guidelines: Why Tithe When Giving is So Much Better?
There’s nothing wrong with giving money to the preacher if that’s what you want to do, and it is done within the guidelines above.
Power of the Celebrity Preacher
What’s the point of telling people to sow seeds to the pastor when the church is already paying him a salary (from “tithes” and offerings)?
What that suggests to me is that the pastor wants more money. Instead of Kim’s pastor telling his church he wants more money, he brings in a Celebrity Preacher (CP) to say it for him.
The CP is rich and knows how to get people to give money. People are more likely to give money because the CP said so. And that’s the power and influence of celebrity.
