Can You Tithe Other Than Money?

Clock and hourglass

THERE ARE OTHER ways to tithe besides money. One of the best ways I’ve discovered is tithing my time. The kingdom principle behind the biblical tithe is to put God first. Giving God the first 10% of my day (two hours and 40 minutes) is a creative way to tithe. I start my day with prayer, meditation, and other spiritual practices that strengthen my relationship with Father Yah.

Make Time for the Lord

A tithe means 10 percent or a tenth part. Ancient Israel gave a tithe (tenth) of its crops to the Lord (Deuteronomy 14:22-27). This is how God instructed them to practice the kingdom principle of putting Him first.

As kingdom citizens, we can apply the same principle. However, we can tithe our time. Since we all have 24 hours a day, we can devote a tenth of our day to God. We can spend two hours and 40 minutes daily focused on the Lord. I consider this an excellent way of tithing my time.

I tithe my time as soon as I wake up each day. The first thing I do is say the Lord’s Prayer, followed by praise of thanksgiving. I like saying, “This is the day the Lord has made, and I shall be glad and rejoice in it (Psalm 118:24).”

Next, I share with God what’s on my mind. I talk to Him like I speak to my best friend. Afterward, I enter into a Holy Spirit-led meditation. I lay still and get quiet so that I can hear from God. I listen for God’s “still small voice (1 Kings 19:12).”

Sometimes, I may read the Bible or other books that feed my Spirit. This is one of the creative ways to tithe that I practice daily.

Reap the Benefits of Tithing Your Time

Tithing my time has several benefits. It keeps me kingdom-focused because I’m making God my number one priority. Two, it strengthens my relationship (or, as I say, my oneship) with the Most High. The more time I spend with God, the more I discover about Him.

Additionally, I gain more insight into my life purpose. Three, I develop sensitivity to the voice of God’s Holy Spirit. Through my meditation, in particular, I often receive Divine Downloads.

These include insights, ideas, visions, revelations, etc. Finally, it sets the tone for the rest of my day. It keeps my Spirit, mind, body, and soul aligned with the will of God so I can enjoy life to the fullest.

Overcome the Noise of the World

You can overcome distraction when you tithe your time first thing in the morning. Distraction is one of Satan’s greatest weapons. The enemy wants us to focus on everything except God. Many of us will grab our cell phones before we reach for a Bible. We’ll rush to hear the latest celebrity gossip before listening to what “thus saith the Lord.”

We’re so overwhelmed with external voices. So many social media platforms, entertainment channels, and news outlets are vying for our attention that it’s easy to place God on the back burner. However, starting your day with a tithe of time cuts through all the distractions.

Consider These Tips Before Tithing Your Time

I have a few suggestions on how to tithe your time. Find a quiet place in your home. Designate a go-to spot. It can be any place where you feel the most comfortable. It can range from a closet or bathroom to a laundry room or garage. The next important thing is setting aside time.

Tithing early in the morning is best because it’s nice and peaceful. You’re most open and receptive to God’s presence when you wake up. Consider tithing between 3 am and 6 am. The Hebrew tradition refers to this time frame as the Third Watch. The Romans called it the Fourth Watch.

The Third Watch is an ideal time for accessing God’s Kingdom. The Bible mentions many miracles that took place during the Third Watch. These include Moses parting the Red Sea (Exodus 14:25-26), Jesus and Paul walking on water (Matthew 14:25-26), and Yahshuah’s resurrection (Matthew 28:1).

Additionally, Jesus discussed how vital these hours are regarding what God seeks to do in the earthly realm (Luke 12:35-40).

Luke 12:35-40

35 Let your loins be girded about, and your lights burning;

36 And ye yourselves like unto men that wait for their lord, when he will return from the wedding; that when he cometh and knocketh, they may open unto him immediately.

37 Blessed are those servants, whom the lord when he cometh shall find watching: verily I say unto you, that he shall gird himself, and make them to sit down to meat, and will come forth and serve them.

38 And if he shall come in the second watch, or come in the third watch, and find them so, blessed are those servants.

39 And this know, that if the goodman of the house had known what hour the thief would come, he would have watched, and not have suffered his house to be broken through.

40 Be ye therefore ready also: for the Son of man cometh at an hour when ye think not.

King James Version

Of course, you don’t have to tithe during those hours. The point is to make time for God. Submit yourself to Him first. There are no hard or fast rules here. Above all, let the Holy Spirit guide you on the best way to tithe your time.
