What Is Tithing?

At its core, tithing is giving a portion of one’s income or resources to support a higher cause or organization. It is rooted in the belief that by giving, we create a positive impact on the world around us. Although it’s traditionally associated with religious practices, tithing can take various forms, such as the following:

  • Making financial contributions to churches
  • Giving charitable donations to non-profit organizations
  • Volunteering time and skills to community projects

Tithing is a way to contribute to the betterment of society and align our actions with our values.

The Biblical History and Significance of Tithing

Tithing dates back thousands of years. It can be traced to ancient civilizations such as the Egyptians, Sumerians, and Babylonians. In these early societies, tithing was a means of supporting pagan temples and making offerings to their gods.

In the Christian context, tithing holds a special significance. For example, tithing is rooted in a modern-day interpretation of biblical tithing. In the Scriptures, the Lord defines tithes as 10 percent of ancient Israel’s agricultural produce (Leviticus 27:30).

According to the Mosaic Law (i.e., the Law of Moses), the Lord commanded the Hebrew Israelites to give this percentage of consumable goods to the tribe of Levi. The purpose was to support them so they could focus on providing religious services to God’s people (Numbers 18:21,26).

The tribe of Levi served as the Tabernacle (later Temple) priests and assistants. Because of their role, they were the only tribe with no land inheritance, meaning they had no land to farm to support themselves.

The Bible states the Lord was their inheritance (Deuteronomy 10:9). Ancient Israel’s tithe system also cared for the widows, the fatherless, and strangers among them (Deuteronomy 14:28). However, it’s important to note the biblical tithe was never money.

Many Christian pastors have a different perspective on the biblical tithe. They promote tithing a tenth of one’s income to support the church and its ministries. In some cases, preachers pressure their congregations into tithing, implying that it is a mandate from God.

Unfortunately, some preachers take Scriptures out of context with the intent of manipulating, deceiving, and coercing their followers into giving money. On the other hand, some Christian religious leaders view tithing as an act of obedience, trust, and gratitude towards God.

4 Benefits of Tithing

Tithing has many benefits beyond the immediate impact on the recipient. Let’s explore some of these benefits in more detail:

1. Personal growth: Giving a tenth of your income can enhance personal growth and self-reflection. It helps you cultivate empathy and compassion, which leads to a better appreciation of the difficulties others face. This generous gesture allows you to focus on the welfare of others instead of solely on your concerns.

2. Relationships: Tithing can strengthen relationships and build communities. When you unite to support a common cause, you connect with like-minded individuals who share your Bible-based values. Those relationships can provide you with support, inspiration, and collaboration. They can enrich your life and create a sense of belonging.

3. Physical and mental well-being: Numerous studies have shown that acts of generosity can have a positive impact on your physical and mental well-being. For example, Dr. Waguih William IsHak, a psychiatric professor at Cedars-Sinai, cites studies linking kind acts to releasing “feel good” brain chemicals, such as dopamine. Additionally, tithing can provide a sense of purpose and fulfillment, contributing to a healthier and more fulfilling life.

4. Spiritual connection: Tithing can foster a deeper connection with the Most High. By acknowledging your blessings and expressing gratitude, you open yourself to receiving spiritual guidance (Philippians 4:6-7). Tithing can serve as a spiritual practice that deepens your faith.

Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

The act of tithing can benefit the giver and the recipient. Psychological speaking, tithing can help increase your overall happiness. When we give, our brains release “feed good” chemicals, contributing to your overwell well-being and fulfillment. Additionally, it has the potential to draw you closer to God.

How to Calculate Your Tithe

Calculating your tithe is not a one-size-fits-all practice. You may give more or less than 10 percent. Your choice depends on your financial situation. Here are a few approaches to consider:

  • Percentage-based tithing: The calculation is straightforward for those who follow the traditional practice of giving a tenth of their income. Multiply your income by 0.10 (or 10%) to determine your tithe amount. For example, if your gross annual income is $50,000, your tithe is $5,000. If you’re net yearly income after taxes is $40,000, you could tithe $4,000.
  • Proportional tithing: Proportional tithing takes into account your financial responsibilities and obligations. It involves giving a proportionate amount that aligns with your financial situation. For example, if you have significant debts or financial commitments, you may tithe a smaller percentage until you are more stable.
  • Progressive tithing: Progressive tithing involves increasing your tithe as your income grows. This approach recognizes that as your financial resources increase, so does your capacity to give. By gradually increasing your tithe, you can experience the joy of giving more as you achieve greater financial success.

The method of calculating your tithe should align with your financial circumstances. It is essential to approach tithing with a genuine desire to give and support the church or other charity that matters to you.

Additionally, finding a balance that aligns with your values and allows you to give without causing financial strain is essential. The Apostle emphasizes this point when it comes to New Testament giving. It advises the saints to give what they can afford (2 Corinthians 8:12).

12 For if there be first a willing mind, it is accepted according to that a man hath, and not according to that he hath not.

Tithing Alternatives and Charitable Giving options

When we think of tithing, we often think of making financial contributions to our local church. However, the Bible doesn’t limit our giving to a church or money. There are numerous ways believers can give back. Here are a few options to consider:

  • Charitable giving: Giving allows you to support causes and organizations that align with your Christian values. You can research and identify reputable charities that address issues you are passionate about, such as pro-life advocacy, shelter for the homeless, or food for the hungry. You contribute to the work in these areas by making a one-time or recurring donation.
  • Volunteering: Volunteering your time and skills is an invaluable way to give back. You can offer your expertise to nonprofit organizations, community centers, or local initiatives. Whether it’s teaching a skill, mentoring, or helping with administrative tasks, your contribution can make a significant difference in the lives of others.
  • In-kind donations: In-kind donations involve giving tangible goods or resources instead of money. This can include donating food to a local food bank, clothing to a shelter, or books to a school. In-kind donations allow you to contribute in a way that directly addresses the immediate needs of those less fortunate.

Remember, giving in any form can have a meaningful and lasting impact. Choose the method that resonates with you and aligns with your Christian values. Use resources such as Guidestar, Charity Navigator, or the Better Business Bureau to seek a worthwhile, legitimate charity.

All these activities are valuable forms of tithing. Countless charitable organizations and initiatives provide opportunities for believers to make a positive impact. From local community projects to global humanitarian efforts, finding a cause that resonates with you and supports your Christian values is key.

Common Misconceptions About Tithes

Tithing has its fair share of misconceptions. Let’s address some of the common misunderstandings surrounding tithing that confuses some believers:

  • Tithing is only for the wealthy: Tithing is not limited to those with substantial financial resources. It is a practice that individuals at all income levels can embrace. Regardless of the amount, giving holds significance and can positively impact both the giver and the recipient.
  • Tithing guarantees financial prosperity: Tithing should not be seen as a guaranteed pathway to wealth and riches. While some individuals may experience financial blessings due to their tithing practice, giving should not be approached solely with the expectation of financial gain. Tithing is about cultivating a mindset of generosity and gratitude rather than focusing on obtaining material possessions.
  • Tithing is limited to monetary contributions: Tithing extends beyond giving money. It can involve giving time, skills, or resources to support churches, causes, and non-profit organizations. Tithing is about the intention behind the giving rather than its specific form (Deuteronomy 15:10).
  • Tithing is an obligation: While tithing is often seen as an obligation in many Christian denominations, it’s best to approach it with a God-given desire to give. Tithing should be viewed as an opportunity for personal growth, gratitude, and generosity rather than a burdensome obligation.

Tithing is more than just a routine religious act. It can serve as a heartfelt gesture of generosity and gratitude. By setting aside a portion of your earnings, you can channel that gratitude into tangible support for the church or other charitable organizations. And, of course, tithing can include your time, skills, and talents. Whatever way you choose to tithe, it’s one way to cultivate a spirit of giving and thankfulness in your heart.
