“A PASTOR REBUKES A NON-TITHER” is a 9-part teaching series inspired by a letter from one of our YouTube subscribers. Our YouTube subscriber does not practice tithing, as taught in the Christian church (paying 10 percent of your income).
Our subscriber attends a church where the pastor believes and teaches that they should tithe by paying 10 percent of their income. The pastor wrote our YouTube subscriber a letter outlining his belief in tithing. The pastor cites biblical scriptures in the letter to support his belief in the monetary tithe.
Each lesson in this series addresses a major point the pastor makes in the letter. Each lesson contains actual quotes from the letter. The purpose of this teaching series is to help clear up any confusion or misunderstanding surrounding the topic of tithing for both clergy and parishioners.

A Pastor Speaks Out
Here’s a quote from the letter:
In Malachi 3 God reminds us that he doesn’t change. He is the same yesterday, today and forever. Therefore, if he honored our financial contributions to the churches in the past do you think He has changed His mind now? In chapter 4 of Malachi God says “remember the Law of Moses.
Key points addressed in this lesson:
1. God does make changes.
2. God changed from the Old Covenant to the New Covenant.
3. God honors faith – not works of the Law
4. Remembering the Law of Moses is not directed toward Christians.
A Closer Look at Malachi
The Book of Malachi is one of the most misinterpreted books of the Bible as it relates to the topic of tithing. We see here that the Prophet Malachi specifically addresses ancient Israel and the Levitical Priests.
At this time, the Levitical Priests, in particular, were not following the Law of Moses. A consequence of this disobedience was that God would curse them. The Prophet Malachi admonishes their disobedience and reminds ancient Israel of the importance of staying true to the Law of Moses.
In this lesson, we see that the essence of who God is does not change. However, according to scripture, God changes how things are done. The greatest example is when God replaced the Old Covenant with the New Covenant. The New Covenant was introduced through the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
What does this have to do with tithes? Tithing is part of the Old Covenant, so it’s also obsolete.
Works of Faith, Not Flesh
Furthermore, the Old Covenant was based on works. The New Covenant that Christians are under is based on faith. God honors your faith.
Galatians 3:11
“Now it is clear no one is justified before God by the law, because the righteous one will live by faith.”
God promises blessings to those who are under the New Covenant. Therefore, Christians receive blessings through faith. When preachers impose so-called tithing on their congregations and use the Book of Malachi to justify it, they are blocking the blessings of the believer because by practicing so-called tithing; they are returning to the Law.
In Galatians 4:8-12 the Apostle Paul emphasizes that heirs of the promise (believers) are not to return to Law.
Galatians 4:8-12
8 Formerly, when you did not know God, you were slaves to those who by nature are not gods. 9 But now that you know God—or rather are known by God—how is it that you are turning back to those weak and miserable forces[a]? Do you wish to be enslaved by them all over again? 10 You are observing special days and months and seasons and years! 11 I fear for you, that somehow I have wasted my efforts on you.
12 I plead with you, brothers and sisters, become like me, for I became like you. You did me no wrong.
