Why the Monetary Tithe Is a Myth
I RECORDED A four-part teaching series on the topic of tithing. The video series introduces biblical tithing and briefly overviews my book, The Tithing Hoax.
The teaching series answers three of the most common questions about tithing.
- What is the tithe?
- Who was commanded tithe?
- Why were tithes paid?
The Tithing Hoax, Chapter 7 – Christians Were Not Commanded is the basis of this Part 1 teaching.
Deuteronomy 14:23, KJV
23 And thou shalt eat before the Lord thy God, in the place which he shall choose to place his name there, the tithe of thy corn, of thy wine, and of thine oil, and the firstlings of thy herds and of thy flocks; that thou mayest learn to fear the Lord thy God always.

Frequently Asked Questions
What Is the Definition of Tithing in the Bible?
In the Bible, tithing refers to giving a tenth, or 10%, of one’s agricultural produce and livestock to God, specifically for the support of the Levites, the Temple, and the needy.
Several Old Testament scriptures outline this principle. One such verse, Leviticus 27:30 (KJV), states, “And all the tithe of the land, whether of the seed of the land, or of the fruit of the tree, is the LORD’s: it is holy unto the LORD,” emphasizing the sanctity and set portion of the tithe.
How Much Are Tithes and Offerings?
In the Bible, tithes traditionally refer to giving a tenth, or 10%, of crops and cattle to God. This is distinct from offerings. In the Bible, offerings refer to gifts given to God beyond the stipulated tithe, often as expressions of gratitude, devotion, or for the atonement of sins. There was no specific amount assigned to offerings.
Offerings could include animals, grains, and other valuables and were presented during various religious ceremonies and festivals. Leviticus 1:2 (KJV) instructs, “Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, If any man of you bring an offering unto the LORD, ye shall bring your offering of the cattle, even of the herd, and of the flock,” indicating the types of offerings acceptable during certain rituals.
What Does the New Testament Say About Tithing 10 Percent?
The New Testament doesn’t specifically mandate tithing 10 percent as the Old Testament does. Instead, the New Testament emphasizes giving generously and cheerfully based on one’s conviction and the condition of the heart.
2 Corinthians 9:7 (KJV) states, “Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver.” This suggests that the focus for Christians is on the attitude and intent of giving rather than a fixed percentage.
