Pay Rent or Pay Tithes? Inquiring Minds Want To Know

pay tithes or pay bills

It’s best to pay rent before paying tithes. Recently, I stumbled upon a story about a woman who chose to pay her tithe before paying her rent. The hefty 10% placed her in a financial bind, falling behind in her rent. This sad story is only one example of how blindly embracing religious doctrines can harm believers.

A YOUNG WOMAN posted a Tweet stating she used her rent money to pay tithes. As a result, she did not know how to pay her rent. And she was waiting on God to send her the money for her rent. That Tweet inspired the following commentary.

Don’t Neglect Your Household

I weigh in on the issue of whether you should pay your rent or pay your tithes. For me, the answer is obvious. You pay your rent. However, there are many Christians who have different views.

Thanks to the Prosperity Gospel and the Tithe Doctrine, many Christians believe they are doing God a favor when they neglect their financial responsibilities to pay God his 10 percent.

Frequently Asked Questions

What God Says About Paying Tithes?

In the Old Testament, tithing was instituted where the Israelites gave a tenth of their produce and livestock to support the Levites, the Temple, and the community’s welfare. Leviticus 27:30 (KJV) states, “And all the tithe of the land, whether of the seed of the land, or of the fruit of the tree, is the LORD’s: it is holy unto the LORD.”

This practice was a way to honor God and provide for the Levites who served in the Temple. In the New Testament, Christians aren’t commanded to give a tenth. Instead, they’re encouraged to give joyfully from the heart and according to their ability.

Is It a Sin Not To Pay Tithes?

In the Old Testament, tithing was a requirement for the Israelites, and neglecting it was seen as withholding what was rightfully God’s. Malachi 3:8-9 (KJV) says, “Will a man rob God? Yet ye have robbed me. But ye say, Wherein have we robbed thee? In tithes and offerings. Ye are cursed with a curse: for ye have robbed me, even this whole nation.”

However, in the New Testament, the emphasis shifts from the legalistic practice of tithing to the principle of cheerful and generous giving. 2 Corinthians 9:7 (KJV) states, “Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver.” In the Old Testament, tithing was mandatory, but the New Testament focuses on our willingness to give, not a specific amount.

Should You Be Paying Tithes on Social Security?

The decision to tithe on Social Security or any other form of income is personal and not explicitly addressed in the Bible. As described in the scriptures, tithing pertains to ancient Israel giving a tenth of its increase or produce. The Old Testament gave rules about tithing.

However, the New Testament focuses on free will giving based on what you can afford. Scripture does not say where the money should come from. Therefore, whether to tithe on Social Security is a matter of personal conviction and your relationship with God.

Should You Pay Tithes From Gross or Net?

The Bible does not address the question of tithing from gross or net income. In the Old Testament, tithing was based on the Hebrew Israelites’ increase or agricultural produce without specific reference to gross or net amounts.

In the New Testament, the focus is on cheerful giving rather than a specific percentage or formula. Ultimately, the decision to tithe from gross or net income is a matter of personal conviction. Christians are encouraged to seek guidance from their faith, their understanding of the scriptures, and their relationship with God.
