Some preachers don’t trust their congregation to give voluntarily. So they resort to manipulation, coercion, and fear tactics. This approach to collecting money (tithes and offerings) often works. For these preachers, using these tactics provides a steady flow of money into the church. Unfortunately, it can also lead to church financial abuse.
One of our viewers wants to know: Why do some preachers use sales pitches when they need money?
Here’s the full question from the viewer:
Why don’t they say we have a budget? You sit there every week. We need help, so give as you are led by the Holy Ghost (2 Cor. 9) – and be done with it, and then trust the Lord to supply the ministry needs without the high sales pitch.
Here’s my response to that question.

God Is the Source
First, the preachers treat the congregations as the source of the provision. And the Bible makes it clear God is the source and works through man to get the provision to you.
Philippians 2: 13
For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.
Furthermore, the Bible warns against putting trust in man. In this case, the preachers should rely on God, not the congregation, to help them cover the expenses of the church and/or ministry.
Psalm 118: 8
It is better to trust in the Lord than to put confidence in man.
Some Preachers Lack Faith
Finally, it demonstrates a lack of faith in God among these preachers. So, they resort to manipulation, coercion, fear tactics, and sales pitches to make people give them money, even though the Bible clarifies that New Testament Christians are to give voluntarily, according to the Spirit.
2 Corinthians 9: 7
7 Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver.
When someone is called to the ministry, God always provides the provision.
Philippians 4: 19
But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.
RECAP
Why do some preachers use sales pitches when they need money?
They’re relying on the congregation instead of trusting God for the provision. God is the source. Man is the vessel. And if these preachers are doing what God has called them, then there’s no need for them to use sales pitches (or gimmicks) with their congregation.
