Tithing is not for today. According to the Bible, God only commanded ancient Israel to tithe. This tithe commandment is part of the Old Covenant (or Law of Moses). Under the Old Covenant, ancient Israel gave tithes (agricultural produce and cattle) as sacrificial offerings. The sacrificial offerings were used to cleanse ancient Israel of its sin. For New Testament believers, Jesus offered his life for the remission of sin. Therefore, the tithing was no longer necessary.

Is Tithing for Today?
I encourage you to read Hebrews 10:1-18 because it explains why the tithing system of sacrifices and offerings is neither acceptable nor a part of the New Covenant (New Testament).
Scripture makes it clear that Jesus gave his life and shed his blood. His blood cleansed the world of sin. Jesus’ death served as the last sacrifice offered. Therefore, it was no longer necessary to continue the tithing system in any fashion.
Under the New Covenant, Christians didn’t pay tithes. New Testament Christians practice Spirit-led giving. They gave free-will offerings to help those in need. This is the only type of giving that God established after the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. This type of Giving is also referred to as Giving under Grace.
Giving under grace is for today’s Christian church, whereas biblical tithing is of the Old Covenant and was only for ancient Israel.
