- A false doctrine often contradicts or goes against what the Bible teaches.
- It relies on man-made teachings instead of scripture.
- It promotes sin.
- It attempts to deceive people into believing something that is not true.
For example, the prosperity gospel is a false doctrine that teaches that God will bless you with riches and material possessions if you have faith. This teaching is not Biblical and contradicts the Bible’s words about how God deals with His people.
Also, prosperity gospel preachers teach false tithing doctrines. They teach the Old Testament tithing command in a way that makes believers feel guilty for not paying tithes. This is not the right way to teach about tithing- the Bible teaches that we should give out of love and joy, not out of obligation.
Reasons Why the Church Has False Teachers
False teachers often use their position to control people and to get what they want. They also often twist scripture to fit their own agenda, confusing and misleading believers.
This is why the Bible says in Titus chapter one, verse eleven: “They must be silenced because they are ruining whole families by teaching for hire what they ought not to teach.” (Titus 1:11). It’s important to be able to identify false teachers so that we can avoid being misled by them.
How to Recognize False Teachers?
Christians must discern false teachers. There are a few key ways to spot a false teacher. First, look at their motivation. False teachers usually teach for financial gain or to build their own following. They have no interest in teaching the truth.
Second, look at their doctrine. False teachers often distort Scripture to fit their own agenda. They may teach that you can earn your way to Heaven or don’t need Jesus Christ as your Savior.
Third, look at their character. False teachers often have a history of sin and deception. They often have involvement with heresy or cults.
Fourth, look at their fruits. False teachers usually don’t produce good fruit. Their teachings will not lead to spiritual growth or maturity.
What do you do when you encounter a false teacher? Take a stand. You can do this by praying for them, exposing their false teachings, and refusing to listen. You can also warn other believers about the danger of their teachings.

When exposed to false teachers, it’s important to remember that Jesus is the only way to salvation. There’s no need to worry or to be afraid; Jesus will protect you from harm.
In addition, pray for discernment and seek truth. Be sure to read the Bible and study it carefully so you can recognize false teachings when you see them.
Also, ask God for guidance and strength to stand up against false teaching. Finally, share the truth with others.
Here are a few Bible verses that can help you when you’re dealing with false teachers:
"Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world. By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, and every spirit that does not confess Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the Antichrist, which you heard was coming and now is in the world already." (1 John 4: 1-3)
"But there were false prophets also among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the Lord who bought them, bringing swift destruction on themselves. Many will follow their depraved conduct and because of them the way of truth will be blasphemed. In their greed these teachers will exploit you with fabricated stories. Their condemnation has long been hanging over them, and their destruction has not been sleeping." (2 Peter 2: 1-3)
