What Is the Health and Wealth Gospel?
Some preachers who publicly teach the health and wealth gospel are Kenneth Copeland, Creflo Dollar, and Benny Hinn. They claim Christians can get whatever they pray for with enough faith. They believe people should pray positive confessions to acquire possessions such as houses, cars, clothes, and money.
If you think positively about these things, they’ll happen for you. If not, it means you don’t have faith, or something bad must happen with your life! According to the Bible, sometimes financial hardships, health issues, or other problems are trials sent to teach us lessons (James 1:2-17).
What are the Dangers of the Health and Wealth Gospel?
- Some people who believe in the health and wealth gospel may be more materialistic.
- Some believers may feel guilt, shame, or bitterness when they are not blessed with good health or financial riches.
- Some Christians who enjoy health and wealth believe it means that God is favoring them. And this can lead to arrogance or a sense of entitlement.
- There are health and wealth preachers who get rich from their followers. As a result, they become more materialistic and haughty. Some health and wealth preachers also live in luxury while their followers can barely afford to buy food for themselves.
- This health and wealth gospel is a false gospel that leads Christians away from the truth of the Bible. It could also cause them to misunderstand God, affecting their relationship with Him and others.
- This health and wealth gospel can lead people into sin since they focus more on money and material possessions than God. This health and wealth gospel is not the true Gospel of Jesus the Christ, which teaches that salvation comes through grace alone by believing in Christ’s death for our sins and His resurrection.
What Does the Bible Say About the Health and Wealth Gospel?
The Bible does not teach that Christians can claim anything they want through positive confession. Several Bible verses specifically warn against the health and wealth gospel.
One such verse is 2 Corinthians 11:3-4, which says:
“But I am afraid that just as Eve was deceived by the serpent’s cunning, your minds may somehow be led astray from your sincere and pure devotion to Christ. For if someone comes to you and preaches a Jesus other than the Jesus we preached, or if you receive a different spirit from the one you received or a different gospel from the one you accepted, you put up with it easily enough.”
Another verse is Colossians 2:8-10 which says:
“See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the basic principles of this world rather than on Christ. For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form, and you have been given complete assurance of your faith in Him.”

The Bible teaches us that even Jesus did not receive everything He claimed through positive confession.
For example, in Matthew 26:39-44, Jesus did not receive the cup of the Lord by using positive confession. Instead, he stated, “Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will but yours be done.”
Our health and success in life are determined through God’s discretion. The health and wealth gospel contradicts many biblical teachings because it teaches Christians to influence God’s choice through positive confession.
The health and wealth gospel takes away the central theme of Christianity; that Jesus Christ died to provide salvation for all people, rich or poor (Mark 10:45).
Christians should not blame health problems on a lack of faith but trust in God’s will regardless of whether their health is good or bad.
How Can the Health and Wealth Doctrine Hurt Someone’s Life or Faith?
Health and wealth gospel preachers often promise health and wealth to their followers. But many Christians have been hurt by these false teachings. For example, one woman was told by a preacher that if she gave him $1,000, God would bless her with a new car. But she felt like she had failed God when she didn’t receive the car.
A preacher told another woman that if she gave him $5,000, God would bless her with a new home. But she felt like she had failed God when she didn’t receive the home. These examples show that health and wealth gospel preachers often promise things they cannot deliver.
Another way the health and wealth gospel preachers have hurt Christians is by stealing from them. Many health and wealth preachers have been convicted of tax fraud, racketeering, bribery, and other crimes that hurt those they claimed to serve.
The health and wealth gospel also encourages people to believe God will heal them in return for their money. But when health problems don’t disappear, this false theology has led many people into debt, depression, or worse.
A Final Word
Some Christian pastors preach the health and wealth gospel, a dangerous doctrine. The health and wealth gospel is a false teaching encouraging Christians to believe they can claim material possessions through positive confession.
This theology is based on unbiblical ideas that are contrary to the teachings of Jesus. The health and wealth gospel has led many people away from God’s true message of salvation through Christ.
In this podcast, we’ve explored how it can be harmful to follow these teachings in our lives as believers. We hope you have been blessed by this message. So please like, share, and subscribe so other believers don’t fall victim to false prophets!
